Formation is one of those mechanics that feels like a detail but actually makes a meaningful difference in how your troops perform in battle and how efficiently they operate in other activities. New players often set a formation once and forget about it. Better players switch formations based on what they're doing.

The core idea is simple: your heroes are matched to specific troop types, and putting the right heroes with the right troops in the right formation multiplies everyone's effectiveness. Mismatch them and you're leaving free stats on the table.

    The Three Troop Types

Every troop you train falls into one of three types: Assaulters, Riders, or Shooters. Each type has different combat characteristics and each type is linked to a specific hero faction.

    🩸

    Blood Rose → Assaulters

Front-line damage dealers. High attack output, built for aggressive PvP compositions. Katrina, Yu Chan and Licia all synergise with Assaulter troops.

    🌅

    Wings of Dawn → Shooters

Ranged damage specialists. Strong sustained output from a distance. Laura, Queenie and Alma all work best with Shooter troop formations.

    🛡️

    Guard of Order → Riders

Defensive and disruptive. High survivability, good at absorbing damage and protecting other formations. Chinatsu and Harleyna pair with Rider troops.

When you put your heroes with their matching troop type in formation, they get faction synergy bonuses that boost both the heroes and the troops. Mismatched formations miss out on these bonuses entirely. In my experience the difference is around 10-15% effective combat power — that's enough to swing close fights.

    Combat Formation

For PvP and events, your 1st formation should always contain your strongest heroes and highest tier troops. The 1st formation is what attacks and what gets attacked first — it needs to be your best. No exceptions.

2nd and 3rd formations are support and backup. Use them for secondary objectives like holding territory in Canyon Clash or providing backup troops in rallies. They don't need your S-tier heroes — solid A-tier heroes work fine here.

Don't send your 1st formation on gathering marches. I've seen players do this and then wonder why their base is defenseless when they get attacked. Gathering heroes like Giselle and Natalie should be in a separate formation specifically for resource runs — they don't need combat stats, they need load capacity.

    Gathering Formation

A dedicated gathering formation should contain your gathering heroes (Giselle, Natalie, Athena) and enough troops to max the load capacity of the march. Using a combat formation for gathering wastes your best troops on a non-combat activity and leaves your base under-defended.

Set up a separate formation specifically for resource gathering marches and swap to it when you're sending farmers out. It takes thirty seconds to switch and the habit saves your best troops for when they actually matter. On my server the players who get hit hardest are the ones with their entire army out on gathering runs.

    Unlocking More Formation Slots

Formation slots are unlocked through the Formation building and through research. Upgrading the Formation building gives you more active slots, which means more simultaneous marches and more flexibility in how you deploy troops. Research in the formation tree gives stat bonuses to all formations. It's not the highest priority research tree but it's worth keeping in mind as your base matures.

    Faction Counters in Formation

When you're deciding which formation to attack with or defend against, faction counters matter. Wings of Dawn beats Blood Rose. Blood Rose beats Guard of Order. Guard of Order beats Wings of Dawn. It's a rock-paper-scissors system and ignoring it is how you lose fights you should have won.

    ⚠️
    WARNING

If you know an enemy is running a specific faction, use the formation that counters it. If you're running the countered faction into a prepared defender, expect heavier losses than your power difference suggests. Scout first, always.

    Do This04
    • Match hero faction to troop type in formations
    • Keep 1st formation as your absolute strongest lineup
    • Use a dedicated gathering formation with gathering heroes
    • Check faction counter before committing to PvP attacks
    Avoid This04
    • Send your best combat formation on gathering runs
    • Ignore faction synergy bonuses — 10-15% power difference
    • Set formation once and never adjust it for different situations
    • Use gathering heroes in your combat formation slots
