Resources — The Basics You Actually Need
Updated 7 Aug 2026 · 6 min readFour main resources, plus two support currencies. Simple in theory, always in short supply in practice. Here's what each one does and why you run out of the ones you do.
Resource management isn't complicated in Last Z — it's a handful of habits repeated every single day. Gather consistently, spend with intention, and shield before you go offline. Do those three things and you'll almost never feel the resource pinch that stalls out other players' bases.
Wood
Disappears faster than anything else. Every building upgrade wants huge amounts of it. The Lumberyard produces it but never fast enough at early levels. Gathering from the map fills the gap — make it a daily habit.
Food
Gets consumed by troops passively and in large amounts when you're training. The bigger your army grows, the faster your food drains. Farmhouses help but again — gathering is the real income source.
Steel
Matters more as you progress. You won't need huge amounts early but by mid-game it starts gating advanced upgrades. Don't ignore it.
Zent
The one to treat carefully. Slow to produce, needed for important things, painful to lose to a raid. Never store large unshielded Zent amounts when you're going offline.
Electricity
Produced passively by certain buildings. Monitor your consumption — if you go negative your production buildings start to slow down. Easy to forget about, annoying when it causes problems.
Heroic Experience
Used to level up heroes. Collect it from events and daily missions. Don't hoard it — level your priority heroes consistently.
Always shield your resources if you are storing large amounts. Unshielded resources are easy targets for stronger players on your server.
Priorities by HQ Stage
Early Game (HQ 1–10)
This is a wood and food problem, full stop. Every early HQ upgrade eats wood, and your growing troop count eats food. Send gathering marches every login without fail — this is more valuable than upgrading your Lumberyard or Farmhouse past a basic level. Don't bother chasing Steel or Zent hard yet; you barely need them at this stage. Keep beginner speed-ups pointed at HQ, not resource buildings.
Mid Game (HQ 10–30ish)
Steel starts creeping into the picture as your buildings and research get more advanced. This is also when raiding gets more common because more players around you actually have something worth stealing. Get in the habit of checking your warehouse protection limit before logging off. Tyrant rallies become one of your better Steel sources here — turn on Engage Offline so your troops don't miss them while you sleep.
Late Game (HQ 31+)
Zent becomes the resource you guard most carefully — it's needed for advanced upgrades at this stage and it's slow to rebuild if you lose a big pile of it. Electricity balance also matters more once you've stacked a lot of production and defensive buildings; check it occasionally so nothing is quietly running under capacity.
The Zent crunch really lands around HQ 27–30, where a single HQ level starts costing more than 100M Zent. Approximate per-level Zent costs: HQ 25 ≈ 62.0M, HQ 26 ≈ 86.8M, HQ 27 ≈ 101.1M, HQ 28 ≈ 157.7M, HQ 29 ≈ 221.3M, HQ 30 ≈ 277.1M. The real hard wall comes at HQ 31+, where Steel is introduced as a brand-new resource requirement for the final tiers (HQ 31–35) — a resource you were barely stockpiling before.
Zent isn't only eaten by buildings either. Tech research drinks it too, especially T10 unlock research and Alliance Recognition, so plan both tracks against the same Zent pile.
Common Mistakes
- Maxing resource buildings early instead of gathering. Passive production from a maxed Lumberyard or Farmhouse is nowhere near what a few active gathering marches bring in. Fix: gather first, upgrade production buildings only when the numbers make sense.
- Logging off with resources over the warehouse limit and no shield. This is the single most common way players get raided. Fix: check your totals against your warehouse limit every night before bed.
- Spending your best resources the day before an event. Then the event opens and you've got nothing left to burn on it. Fix: check the event calendar before doing a big upgrade spend.
- Ignoring Electricity until it's already negative. By the time you notice, your buildings have been under-producing for a while. Fix: glance at your electricity balance whenever you add a new building.
- Hoarding Heroic Experience instead of spending it. A stockpile of unused hero XP isn't doing anything for your account. Fix: spend it consistently on your two or three priority heroes.
- Not sending a gathering hero on marches. A gathering-focused hero noticeably increases haul size, and skipping this is free income left on the table. Fix: assign your best gathering hero to resource marches, not combat duty.
Resource Comparison
| Resource | Runs Out | Best Source | Risk If Raided |
|---|---|---|---|
| Wood | Fastest | Gathering marches | High — always low anyway |
| Food | Very fast (army size) | Gathering marches | Medium |
| Steel | Slower, ramps mid-game | Tyrant rallies, steel nodes | Medium-High |
| Zent | Slow to produce | Trade missions, events | Highest — always shield |
| Electricity | N/A (passive balance) | Power buildings | None (not looted) |

Frequently Asked Questions
Wood, without question. Almost every building upgrade needs a huge pile of it and production buildings never quite keep up. If you can only send one gathering march, send it to wood.
Know your warehouse protection limit. Anything you're holding above that limit is exposed. Before you log off, either spend down to under the limit on queues or pop a shield. Never leave excess Zent sitting unshielded.
Not past a certain point. Gathering marches produce far more per hour than passive building output once you're past the early levels. Put your building resources into HQ and combat structures instead and gather actively for your daily income.
Your production buildings start running below their normal rate. It's easy to miss because there's no dramatic warning — just check your electricity balance occasionally, especially after adding new buildings.
Spend it consistently on your two or three priority heroes rather than saving it up. A big stockpile of unused hero XP isn't helping your account — it's XP that could already be turned into levels.
Steel and Zent both become the real bottlenecks once you're past the early HQ levels — Steel gates advanced upgrades and Zent gates high-tier research. Early game it's almost entirely wood and food.
